The basics of antilock brake repairs
Before you drive any car you need to know what type of brakes the vehicle has fitted to ensure that you drive and brake accordingly. If you check the owner’s manual and read the instructions you will understand the type of braking system built into the car and usually gets tips on how best to use the brakes.
ABS (or anti-lock braking systems) feel different, particularly under heavy braking causing the vehicle to seem like it shudders or vibrates. ABS monitors the speed of each wheel and when the control unit detects the onset of brake lock-up it momentarily reduces brake hydraulic pressure to that wheel. Since this adjustment is often made numerous time in the space of a second you may feel a pulsing sensation through the brake pedal.
Some drivers can become overconfident in the belief that ABS brakes will get them out of any immediate trouble but you should remember that stopping distances and traveling speeds are often not any different between non-ABS and ABS equipped cars. In fact, on surfaces such as loose gravel, an ABS equipped car may have a longer braking distance.
